About the Farm

Combine at Langford Farms

Langford Farms is a family owned farm located in central Alabama. My family has owned and farmed land in Autauga County for over 100 years. The majority of the land we farm now was some that my grandfather had since 1943. The land is comprised of row-crop, pasture, wooded pasture, hardwood timber, and some swampland.

My grandfather was a big fox hunter and bird hunter. I remember as a little boy going with him to plant pea patches and plots for the quail. We have continued that tradition, although now our patches consist of several hundred acres. With the rise of the deer population in the late 60's, food plots have to be much larger or they will get eaten to the ground in just a few days. During the summer months, we now plant corn, iron and clay peas, soybeans, and a variety of sericea lespedeza. Sericea lespedeza is a legume like alfalfa, but is way hardier of a plant. It is around 18 percent protein in the leaves and is a perennial plant, which means that we only have to plant it one time. It took the deer a couple years to decide that they liked it, but now they eat it readily. It contains a compound called tannin that helps the digestive tract and is a natural wormer in goats. We are hoping that it has the same affect in deer. We planted an extra 280 acres of it this year to graze cattle on. We put cows on some last year and they got fat as butterballs. During the winter, we have winter peas, wheat, oats, and a tetraploid variety of ryegrass that the deer seem to really like, unlike the old varieties of ryegrass that they didn't like at all. We used to plant a bunch of chuffa for the turkeys, but the hogs have put us out of the chuffa business. We try to have some type of planted crops for the wildlife twelve months out of the year.

We have partnered with a buddy of mine, Bobby Shackelford, which farms in a big way, all around me. We have pooled all our land together to do the hunts on and that has taken us to around 6200 acres. Bobby has been with us for at least ten or twelve years. I really can't remember how long, but it's been a long time. Time flies when you're having fun.

We hope when you come to hunt with us, that you will have a good time also. We will do everything within our power to make your stay one that you will remember fondly. We try our best to put you in the best spots to take the type game that you are hunting. Whether you bag your trophy or not, we sincerely hope that you enjoy yourself. Hunting is supposed to be fun. I've always said that "When you take something as serious as going to work; it's time to find something else to do.

So, come go hunting with us. We'll try our best to make sure that you have a good time.
